On the 13th May 2020 the government re-opened the housing market in England after seven weeks of lockdown.  Estate agents returned to work and new regulations enabling the buying and selling of houses have been introduced.  Buyers or renters can now view properties, arrange removals and move home.

Speaking at the daily Covid-19 briefing on Wednesday 13th May the communities minister Robert Jenrick defended the government’s decision to reopen the housing market in England and added that ‘in the first instance’ house viewings should be carried out virtually where possible to safeguard anyone involved in the viewing process.   In late March the government stopped estate agents advertising new properties and advised people against non-essential house moves.

Amy Kadir, Lonsdale Mortgages mortgage advisor and member of the St Albans mortgage broking team said:

‘It is good news that anyone needing to move home can now do so.  During the recent break various groups including estate agents, removal companies, legal professionals and housebuilders have been discussing new rules so the public can safely buy and sell houses during the pandemic.  These include safe distancing, wearing gloves when required and conducting virtual surveys.  Throughout the pandemic our mortgage broking team have continued to work and we are offering mortgage advice from home on the phone or via video conferencing. As most of our mortgage advice and follow up work was not conducted face to face before the pandemic, we haven’t had to significantly change the way we work.  Our mortgage brokers can review the mortgage market for you to find the most suitable mortgage products and rates for your personal circumstances.  We will work with you to complete your mortgage application form which can be difficult if you are doing it yourself.  We will ask you to email or send us documents to support your application, for example P60’s, passport ID or accounts for the self-employed.  We liaise with your mortgage lender who can give an agreement in principle and report back to you by phone or email and liaise with your solicitor to agree a completion date. All this work can be conducted without meeting you in person.’

Amy Kadir, Lonsdale Mortgages mortgage broker in St Albans, Hertfordshire continued:

We work with first time buyers, anyone wanting to move home or remortgage and buy to let investors.   Remember, Lonsdale Mortgages do not typically charge a fee for their services, we receive commission from the provider except in instances where we organise additional borrowing for a client with their existing lender, as some providers do not offer commission. Our clients find that using a mortgage broker saves them time, and they feel reassured that they have chosen the most appropriate mortgage for their circumstances.’
