Sue Sykes Mortgage Broking team member St Albans runs triathlon for charity

Sue Sykes, Mortgage Administrator based in St Albans and member of the Lonsdale Mortgage Broking team St Albans is preparing to compete in her first triathlon on 13th May to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation.

Sue Sykes, Mortgage Administrator St Albans said:

‘Competing in a triathlon is very different to my mortgage day job where I assist our St Albans Mortgage Brokers who offer mortgage advice.  I was inspired by watching the Brownlee brothers compete in the last two Olympics, and the triathlon is an All Nations triathlon so we get to wear a UK swimming cap which we’re really proud of.  I have heart issues myself as do some of my family so by competing I hope to show that anyone can compete in a triathlon as long as they receive the correct medical advice.’
Sue is part of a team of 4 called the ‘Must-Tri-harders.’  They will compete at Eton Dorney Lake, where the rowing took place for the 2012 Olympics.  The triathlon involves swimming 400m in the lake, a 20km cycle ride and a 5km run round the lake.

Sue Sykes, Mortgage Administrator St Albans said: ‘The training has been a real challenge. I have joined a women's running club to learn how to run 0-5Km in eight weeks.  I also do one 20Km cycle ride a week, down the Alban Way as this best represents the route around Eton Dorney Lake. When I get back from the cycle ride I have started doing brick training.  When you finish the bike ride you immediately start running as your legs have to adapt to using different muscles.  I try to swim at least once a week but this is my strongest discipline.  However, at some stage soon I will need to train in a lake to get the feeling of swimming in a wetsuit and conquer my fear of swimming in murky waters, not knowing what is beneath me.  I have found the training a real challenge, it’s hard just to find the time to train. Trying to motivate myself to do the big cycle ride each week is hard, especially in bad weather. I have no real time expectation for the challenge. My current training suggests I will hopefully complete the course in under two hours, but my goal is to just get around the course in one piece!!’
