Londoners search for properties outside the capital

According to Rightmove visits to their website are up compared with lockdown as more people who have been living and working at home start to think about moving home.

In April 2020 over half (51%) of Rightmove property enquiries from people living in London were for homes outside the capital, up from 42% of enquiries in April 2019. Across the UK, enquiries about buying a home in a village jumped by 126% in June and July 2020 compared with the same period last year, said Rightmove.

Why do Londoners want to move to St Albans in Hertfordshire?

Amy Kadir,  mortgage broker in St Albans, Hertfordshire said:

‘Commuter towns in Hertfordshire such as Harpenden, Radlett, Park Street and St Albans are very much seen as separate from London but they are located close enough to the capital so they are in easy reach of London and less than an hour away on the train.  With more people now working from home or looking to potentially in the future, living further from the office is a real possibility.    As of March 2020, when the latest figures are available the average home costs £239,611 in Herts - compared to the average £486,000 it costs to buy a home in London.  Some first-time buyers and home buyers we talk to want a quieter way of life now they are not having to go into the office every day.  They are interested in buying a home in an area that has more green space than London but still has excellent transport links.  As Hertfordshire is situated close to the A1, M1 and the M25 it is within easy access of main motorways.  Some clients also have young children or want to start a family, so they are interested in finding a house in a quieter area that has good schools.  Many areas in Hertfordshire including St Albans and Harpenden offer excellent schooling options.  For more information about why people are considering buying a home in Hertfordshire read my article – Why St Albans is a popular choice for first time buyers’
